FANUC Demonstrates New 3D Model Matching Software for Bin Picking at IMTS 2016

ROCHESTER HILLS, MI – (Sept. 12, 2016) FANUC America Corporation will demonstrate bin picking automotive parts with the FANUC R-1000iA/100F robot equipped with the new 3D Model Matching software and a 3DA/1300 Area Sensor at IMTS 2016, booth #S-8919.

A FANUC R-1000iA/100F material handling robot will use the 3DA/1300 sensor with the new 3D Model Matching software to locate and pick crankshafts from a bin. Next, the robot loads the part into a mock lathe for machining. Machined parts are returned to a second bin. When the first bin is empty, the cycle runs in reverse. The cell highlights the flexibility of 3D Model Matching to locate complex parts without the need for CAD data, saving customers a significant amount of setup time.

Intelligent R-1000iA Robot

The R-1000iA robot offers three models. The R-1000iA/80F and the 5-axis R-1000iA/80H have an 80kg payload, and the R-1000iA/100F has a 100kg payload. The R-1000iA features a slim design, allowing customers to reduce the overall size of their automation system by using more robots in each work cell, or making work cells with a single robot significantly smaller. The narrow footprint of the R-1000iA also allows for easy access to adjacent robots, fixtures and work pieces. The R-1000iA can be floor or invert mounted, and has a large work envelope.

FANUC 3D Model Matching Software

FANUC’s new 3D Model Matching software analyzes a 3D point cloud to locate a pre-trained 3D model created during iRVision setup. The 3D Model Matching software offers increased flexibility and customized search parameters to easily locate a part in 3D, and does not require a CAD file – even with complex parts. Customers may use the iPendant for complete vision setup and operation.

FANUC 3D Area Sensor for Bin Picking

The high-speed 3D Area Sensor provides a detailed 3D map in one quick vision shot.

It’s an easy-to-use vision tool allowing bin picking setup through the iPendant in a matter of minutes. The 3D Area Sensor is available in two variants – The 3DA/1300 for a wider range of view, and the compact 3DA/400 for small to medium size applications. Both models are equipped with a higher-resolution mode for greater 3D location precision. All of the hardware and software is designed by FANUC specifically for FANUC robots, allowing us to provide our customers a wide range of solutions to meet their production needs.
